For nanospray ESI/LC-MS/MSMS.
ABIRD is a unique device which reduces interferences from variable lab air during nanospray experiments, imparting a consistent low level ion signal across a wide mass range.
Mouse over the most left hand image below, this is a typical nanospray ion trap background ion signature.
Mouse over the next image to the right, this is the same experiment with an ABIRD installed and running.
Note the signal levels, 3.29E4 with no ABIRD, 1.53E3 with ABIRD, about 20X lower background ion signal level. This allows an ion trap to fill with more interesting things, like trace level peptides.
Here is the same experiment in the Orbitrap; 1.27E6 without ABIRD, 4.46E4 with ABIRD, over 20X lower background ion signal. This is typical data from an average lab, some sites have dramatically different background ion signals. The question is:
What does your background ion signal look like?
